Please join us as we celebrate our Musical Heritage. Sacred Harp is a 200 year old American Style of hymn singing. It started at the Coweta County Courthouse soon after it was completed in 1904 and the singing was called "The Coweta County Singing Association". The Coweta County Singing was held the third Sunday in October until 1975 when the courthouse was remodeled and no longer available. The singers met for one last time at the Mt. Gilead Primitive Baptist Church in Madras.
In 2014, during the observance of the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Brown's Mill, the Brown's Mill Battlefield Association wanted to display a style of singing/worship/entertainment popular during the War Between the States. We agreed to sponsor a Sacred Harp Singing School for 2 days and then a regular singing was held again in the courthouse on the 4th Sunday in July, 2015. The group of singers then decided to change the date to the 4th Sunday in October from now on, since that was the traditional day the singing had been held.
This event is FREE. "Dinner on the grounds" will be served in the upstairs meeting room of the Carnegie Library on the West Court Square. Please bring a "full dinner basker" and share your lunch.
Singers and "listeners" are invited to come and stay awhile, 5 minutes or all day.
